"In vitro tests" are evaluations of the skin permeability of active ingredients in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, as well as the release characteristics of topical preparations. These tests utilize animal skin (such as hairless mice and hairless rats), human skin (skin excised during cosmetic surgery abroad), cultured skin (three-dimensional cultured epidermis), and artificial membranes (such as Merck's Strat-M, a human skin substitute).
